Battery Breakthrough?
First post by: www.itbattery.com
I recently was sent an article about electric cars. It profiles the Lightning GT, a 700 hp electric sports car that dell 6Y270 battery can accelerate to sixty mph in four seconds. To me, the news is not so much about the Lightning GT as it is about the batteries being used in the car.
The claim is that the battery, a Lithium-ion (Li-ion) type dell 1X793 battery called Nanosafe being developed by a company called Altairnano, is able to provide a useful operating range of 250 miles, a full recharge time of 10 minutes, and a useful life of 12-20 years through 15,000 charge/discharge cycles.
If a battery can produce this kind of performance, and if large-scale production can enable the battery pack to be profitably sold at a few thousand dollars, mass adoption of electric vehicles cannot be far behind. This is because recharging an electric car from an socket produces a “fuel” that costs about the equivalent of $0.60 per gallon -- about 1/6th the current cost of gasoline at the pump.
That’s a game-changer that could end our addiction to oil. While potentially a big threat to the big petro-companies, such a development would be a huge boon to electric utilities, which all of a sudden would have a major overnight load to soak up off-peak excess capacity.
And, the big long-term winner would be the dell C1295 battery environment. Even if the electricity comes from coal, the emissions profile of an all-electric car is much better than even a highly-efficient gasoline or diesel car. If the electricity is produced by renewables such as solar and wind, then we’re talking about virtually a zero-carbon car.
Aero and battery life
First post by: www.itbattery.com
Dwight Silverman, the tech reviewer at the dell Latitude D510 battery Houston Chronicle, has written about the impact that the Aero theme has on battery life and performance (under the provocative title "Vista, Aero, battery life . . . and Doom" -- he's referring to the game Doom3, BTW). It's a good post and I'd like to take a minute to expand on what Dwight has written.
First off, yes, as Dwight correctly points out, the Aero theme drives the GPU harder and therefore uses more power. But in the big picture, it's really not that much more. For example, the display on most laptops dell Latitude D520 battery will consume somewhere between 15-25% of your "power budget" when you are running on battery. Nevertheless, in our testing we've seen that turning on Aero consumes only about 1-4% more of battery life. In terms of making your dell Latitude D600 battery last longer, turning off Aero will not go very far while at the same time costing you some of the cool features that make Windows Vista fun to use, such as Flip 3D, taskbar previews, window transparency and so on.
Further, as Dwight correctly points out, your mileage can vary widely depending on the workload the machine is running (he uses the example of playing Doom3.) To use an Aero-specific example, you would use more power enabling transparent window borders and stacking a lot of windows upon a portion of the screen showing a video clip. The GPU would be required to constantly re-render those parts of the screen that make up the transparent window edges, which in turn dell Latitude D610 battery drives the GPU harder.
Now, we know there are times when you want to fully maximize battery life and every little bit helps. It's for this reason that we automatically turn off things like window transparency when the machine is put into a power-saving profile. We don't turn off Aero wholesale because in the end, doing so is not going to save you much more power. So we turn off the transparency effects and maintain a smooth user experience. We know that it results in a tradeoff, but we also think it's a fair one to make.
P.S. As an aside, I recently learned that testing the impact of software features on battery life is exceptionally tricky, even by benchmarking standards. A huge number of variables must be controlled for. In fact, something as simple as the way a dell 312-0068 battery is handled can introduce enough variability into testing to make it difficult to identify the true cause of any observed changes in performance or battery life. This is because the charge a battery requires can vary considerably based on, among other things, the battery technology (Li-poly, Li-ion, Ni-MH, etc.), how recently the battery was power-cycled, how old the battery is, and even the temperature of the battery when it was charged.
First Review: HP’s Budget-Friendly, Stylish ProBook
First post by: www.itbattery.com
Today, HP unveiled a new line of notebooks for small dell Inspiron 500m battery business users, starting at a recession-friendly $529. The ProBook has a stylish look (when’s the last time you saw a red business notebook?), comes in 15- and 17-inch screen sizes, and boasts many of the security features offered in the premium EliteBook series (oddly, a fingerprint reader isn’t one of them).
How good is the performance and design? Check out our dell Inspiron 510m battery full review of the ProBook 4510s, which offers a 15.6-inch display, full size keyboard and numberpad, a 2.1-GHZ Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, and DVD burner for $699.
Read on for more details.
15.6-inch
The 4510s (Intel) and the 4515s (AMD, pictured at right) have 15.6-inch, LED-backlit, 16:9 displays, and are available with a Blu-ray-ROM dell Latitude D500 battery drive. However, the 15.6-inch models do not have a Bluetooth option and instead are available with mobile broadband.
They are available with either integrated Intel graphics or discrete ATI graphics. The 15.6-inch models, like the 17-inch ones, have a full number pad on the keyboard. These will be available in Merlot and black.
17-inch
The 17-inch version, the 4710s, is only available with Intel processors and discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics with 512MB dedicated dell Inspiron 600m battery memory. It has a full number pad, as noted above, HDMI output, and a Bluetooth option. It is only available in black.
Availability
Availability for these dell Latitude D505 battery notebooks will vary by region. HP has said, however, that the Merlot color option will become available in June.
Top 15 Ways to Extend Your Laptop’s Battery Life
First post by: www.itbattery.com
Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up. How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible? Here are 15 easy ways to do so.
1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work - less demand dell 1691P battery you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.
2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.
3. Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut dell 75UYF battery down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.
4. Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.
5. Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.
6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual dell 5081P battery drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.
7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.
8. Take care of your battery - Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)
9. Hibernate not standby - Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you dell Inspiron 700m battery left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.
10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.
11. Set up and optimize your power options - Go to ‘Power Options’ in your dell Inspiron 710m battery windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).
12. Don’t multitask - Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!
13. Go easy on the PC demands - The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge - pick your priorities wisely.
14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more dell F5136 battery efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.
15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.
Bonus Tip #1: Turn off the autosave function. MS-Word’s and Excel’s autosave functions are great but because they keep saving regular intervals, they work your hard dell 312-0306 battery driver harder than it may have to. If you plan to do this, you may want to turn it back on as the battery runs low. While it saves battery life in the beginning, you will want to make sure your work is saved when your battery dies.
Bonus Tip #2: Lower the graphics use. You can do this by changing the screen resolution and shutting off fancy graphic drivers. Graphics cards (video cards) use as much or more power today as hard disks - Thanks Andrew
Update 7/7/07: Bonus Tip #1 to give caution dell 312-0305 battery about turning off autosave, tip #8 to change information about discharging batteries - thanks to all who pointed it out. Added Bonus tip #2, Tip #1 to add in clause in regards to Mac OSX, Tip #1 about the spinning of hard drives - thanks to all who pointed it out

8 Tips on How to Run Your Own UnConference
First post by: www.itbattery.com
I’ve attended two unconference style events this year (Startupcamp/Barcamp)- and I’ve become a true believer of this format. Since I’ve seen a lot of what goes on behind the scenes - here are some tips to follow if you want to run a similar show in your location.
1. Get a team of kindred spirits togetherThis is dell Inspiron 4100 battery possibly the most important aspect. The purpose of these unconferences would be to bring together people of the same feather, and to begin - you will need a core of like-minded and driven people. The volunteers who help run this show don’t usually look for recognition nor remuneration.
Everything is fueled by passion.
2. Get sponsors - nice onesGet people who really want to help, rather than take over your event. BarCamp Kuala Lumpur had one rule about sponsors and it was that their donation limit would be capped. This was to prevent any organizer from driving the agenda of the event. To me, this is an excellent path for any dell Inspiron 2500 battery unconference to take.
3. Set up the venue rightIn a nutshell, besides the basics like ease of access, amenities, etc. You need to get a venue with 3 or more large rooms (for the sessions), and perhaps just as important - a large area to mingle. For me, a lot of the value I gain from these events would be the relationships built, and the interesting mix of characters and conversations you will get into informally between sessions.
Make sure all the rooms have an easy to use dell Latitude CPX battery speaker system. Some speakers will have video to show on their laptop, which fails badly if they have to play audio through the laptop sound system.
4. Set the ground rulesDue to its informal setting, there are very few rules for an unconference. Common dell Latitude C600 battery ground rules include staying on time, and being considerate as to not over-run into another session.
5. Trust Don’t bother vetting speaker material and judge quality. Unconference attendees vote with their feet - ie. They can move on to another room based on their own agenda. (Speakers - don’t take this personally - people will walk in and out of of your talk - many attendees bounce around during sessions). Trust the speakers will do their best to contribute to the event, and trust the crowd.
6. Spread the wordUnconferences typically run on a dell Latitude C640 battery shoestring budget, but what it lacks in the wallet section, it makes up for in ability to generate goodwill. Tap into your social networks (online and in real life), the bloggers, and local interest groups. Local interest groups bring along their own set of people passionate about a particular topic, eg. photography, or Linux - this broadens your the breadth of your audience and their backgrounds.
7. Enjoy Whatever happens, happens. Don’t take things so seriously. What you’ll find is that when things go wrong, there will be more people who will step up and help you fix the problem than people who sit back and complain. At the end of the day, everyone who attends is there to share, participate, discuss, and learn.
8. Attend before you attempt
If you’re going to run an event, visit one first! For those people living in Malaysia or Singapore - come to BarcampJB dell Latitude C610 battery happening 6th and 7th December at MSC Cyberport JB I’ll be speaking on "How to change the world with $25 - an introduction to Kiva" on the 6th at 3pm. We have some pretty interesting sessions - full schedule here.

5 Steps to Take When Your laptops Drops Into Water
First post by: www.itbattery.com
Accidents happen.
If you’re ever in a situation where your dell Latitude CPi battery is giving you problems because you got caught in the rain, or dropped it in the sink or toilet, here are 5 steps you can try:
Turn the device off and do not charge it - You want to keep the dell Inspiron 8200 battery non-operational while it dries out.
Drip dry and shake off as much water as possible
Dismantle whatever you can - If you are able to remove the battery and cover, do so. The more you expose the better it will dry.
Cover your dell Inspiron 8000 battery in a bowl of rice - Rice will help absorb moisture (at least it did for this Washington Post writer) like how it does in salt shakers.
Draw it away with a vacuum cleaner held over the affected areas for up to 20 minutes in each accessible area, having already removed the majority of liquids and moisture manually and dried all visible moisture by hand, so that none enters the vacuum cleaner. This method is preferable to leaving it to dry naturally as it halts any oxidation from occurring deep inside, such as can result in functional issues later on. This is the fastest way (less than thirty minutes after your phone drowns, it can be completely dry and working, especially if you are able to also partly or fully disassemble it) to quickly get all the internal moisture out of the dell Inspiron 4000 battery effectively and stop the internals from ‘rotting’ away. Remember that the goal is to suck all the moisture and humidity out of the phone not to blow it even further in and create even more evil humidity deep inside
All in all, the idea here is to get it as dry as as possible - in as quick a time as possible. You’d be surprised how many phones spring back to life once they are dried out. Speaking from experience, I once completely submerged my trusty old Nokia 3315 several times during a camping trip (I forgot it was in my pocket). I just dried it out, and it was just as good as new :)
Note: Fans and hair dryers are not a good ideas as they tend to force moisture further into the small components deep inside the dell Inspiron 8100 battery eventually causing corrosion.

Owen Van Natta To Get MySpace CEO Gig
First post by: www.itbattery.com
MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe and News Corporation’s Chief Digital Officer Jonathan Miller, announced today that, by mutual agreement, Mr. DeWolfe will not be renewing his dell laptop battery contract and will be stepping down in the near future. Mr. DeWolfe will continue to serve on the board of MySpace China and will be a strategic advisor to the Company.
Additionally, Mr. Miller announced that he was in dell Inspiron 6000 battery, dell Inspiron 9300 battery discussions with Tom Anderson, MySpace’s president, about Mr. Anderson assuming a new role in the organization.
“Chris and Tom are true pioneers and we greatly value the tremendous job they’ve done in growing MySpace into what it is today,” said Mr. Miller. “Thanks largely to their vision, MySpace has become a vibrant creative community with 130 million passionate followers worldwide. It is an enormously successful property and we look forward to building on its achievements with a new management structure we’ll announce in the near future.”
“In a little under six years we’ve grown MySpace from a small operation with seven google search people to a very profitable business with over 1,600 employees,” said Mr. DeWolfe. “It’s been one of the best experiences of my life and we’re proud of, and grateful to, the team of talented people who helped us along the way. House Prices Finally Approaching Fair Value
First post by: www.itbattery.com
As goes housing, so goes the rest of the economy. So where do things stand? After two years of precipitous declines that have taken prices down almost 30% from the peak, house prices are finally approaching fair value (which is perhaps 10% below today's level).
That doesn't mean that house prices dell Inspiron 9400 battery will only fall another 10%, however. On the contrary, given the tendency for prices to overshoot, it would be startling if house prices stopped at fair value. More likely, they'll drop at least 10% below fair value before they finally trough. Although the rate of decline is likely to ease over the coming months and years, therefore, prices will likely keep falling through at least 2011. And there's at least 20% downside left.
First, the big picture. Here is how house prices have behaved over the past 120 years, adjusted for inflation, courtesy of professor Robert Shiller. The house price line is on top. Prices are indexed against the 1890 price (left scale), and the chart is updated through the end of Q4.
Here's the same chart superimposed on the economy by the New York Times. A Barry Ritholtz reader has updated dell laptop battery it to reflect the projected decline. Importantly, this version is a couple of quarters out of date. The latest value (end of Q4 2008), as calculated by Professor Shiller, is 137%, not the 155% shown in the chart. Prices have kept dropping since December, moreover, so the actual current value is probably closer to 130%.
Given the modest long-term upward slope of this chart, fair value is probably somewhere in the 110%-120% range (again, indexed against 1890, adjusted for inflation). So this suggest we're still about 10% above fair value. However, note what happened to prices dell 310-6321 battery from 1910 to 1940.
And now for some more recent data.
The Case Shiller index for January 2009 showed house prices still falling 19% year over year. The rate of decline is finally peaking, which is good news. But it is hard to see how it will turn on a dime.
Thanks to a near-30% drop from the top, house prices have now fallen back to 2003 levels. But they are still well above the average trend-line for the last 20 years (100% in this chart). And they are even farther above the pre-bubble trend line of the mid-1990s, which excludes the bubble of 2001-2007.
Housing P/E finally returning to a more normal range
"Housing P/E" measures graph house prices dell 310-6322 battery against rents and incomes. These are the closest thing we have to a price-earnings ratio for housing.
Both measures show that prices are still high but are finally closing in on average levels. After a bubble like this, we would expect prices to significantly overshoot. But the absolute values are finally beginning to look encouraging.
Bear in mind that, as with corporate earnings, rent and incomes are cyclical: As the economy deteriorates, rental rates will drop (as they are now). The same goes for incomes. All else being equal, this will make house prices look more expensive than on these charts.
Price to rent (source Northern Trust) is closing in on fair value. Note that the date lines in the chart below are one standard deviation ABOVE fair value dell D5318 battery for the periods in question. The mean for 1987-2008, which includes the bubble, is 110%, which is about where we are now. The mean excluding the bubble, however, is another 10%+ below today's level.
Price To Income (source: Calculated Risk) Closing In On Fair Value. The trough value for the previous housing decline was 10%-20% below today's level.
Housing Affordability Index at record high...but not particularly meaningful
The National Association of REALTORS and other dell G5260 battery housing promoters now point to the "Housing Affordability Index" as a measure to suggest that houses are already undervalued. Thanks to low interest rates, this theory goes, houses are more affordable--so prices will soon start rising again.
The NAR's latest "housing affordability" calculations are below. But before you get excited, recall the NAR's track record (In 2007, the NAR said laptop batteries house prices would keep right on rising despite the levels in the charts above because houses are always a great investment and that house prices never go down).
Also recall two things: First, the NAR's housing "affordability" index does not take into account the tighter lending standards that most banks have implemented in the past two years (making it harder for would-be buyers to get loans). Second, just because you can theoretically "afford" a house based on your income doesn't mean that you can go out and buy one. Imagine, for example, all the homeowners who would love to buy a house that's much cheaper than the one they have but can't because they can't sell their own house.
Inventories are still too high and will continue to put pressure on prices.
Contrary to what your real-estate agent told you three years ago, house prices are subject to the law of supply and dell G5266 battery demand. Thanks to our construction frenzy of two years ago, today's tighter credit standards, and our ongoing refusal to let in more immigrants, there's still a lot more supply of houses than demand for them. This situation will continue to put pressure on house prices until inventories approach normal levels.
As these charts from Calculated Risk show, absolute inventories of new and existing houses for sale have declined in recent months. This is good news. The drop in new houses in particular is back to the trend level (but not below it).
The reduced sales velocity means that the number of months it will take to work through the googel search existing house inventory is still well above normal. For existing houses, for example, we now have 10 months of inventory.
Thanks to the precipitous declines of the past two years, house prices are finally approaching fair value. But they likely still have another 20% or so to fall (nationally), and they will likely continue to fall for at least two more years.

After two failed bids to acquire Sanyo Electric financial firm has finally accepted an offer from Panasonic to acquire Goldman’s stake in the company. Goldman will now join Sanyo’s other major shareholders, Daiwa Securities SMBC and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, in relinquishing control of Sanyo and allowing Panasonic to create an electronics giant.
Panasonic announced their intentions to acquire Sanyo last month but had to revise offers made to Goldman in order to complete the deal. Daiwa and Sumitomo initially accepted the offer from Panasonic and are expected to go along with the final deal to be made official by both Panasonic and Sanyo on December 26th.
Goldman finally accepted an offer from Panasonic estimated to be 131 yen per share ($1.47) although that figure is still considered to be below Sanyo’s market price. The final offer price for the acquisition is expected to be near 560 billion yen, or $6.36 billion with a tender offer as early as February 2009. Panasonic is interested in acquiring anywhere from 50% to all of Sanyo’s shares.
The merger will create a consumer electronics giant that will be able to compete globally with other leading electronics and battery companies in China and South Korea. Panasonic, which manufactures everything from televisions to Blu-ray disc players, is interested in capitalizing on Sanyo’s industry leading “green” technology including solar panels and rechargeable batteries. The technology and patents owned by Sanyo will allow Panasonic to expand their reach into fields previosuly dominated by Sanyo and perhaps signal a shift in car manufacturing to include lithium-ion batteries and other renewable energy sources.
