Uber has had quite the year, and we’re only halfway done with 2017. The company has been the center of multiple controversies this year, to the point where its CEO and founder Travis Kalanick was forced to resign. Now, Uber is once again facing backlash after footage of a driver receiving oral sex by another passenger was uploaded to social media. The video was filmed by another passenger who was sitting in the backseat. After an uncomfortable eight minutes, the passenger finally asked the driver to drop him off. Shockingly, the driver still requested he get a five star rating.
Uber. A man named Aner Manuel was visiting Chicago from Boston earlier this month and was coming home from a night out. Like most people who don’t have a car or are too drunk to drive, Manuel decided to call an Uber.
Pool. However, when the Uber arrived to pick him up, Manuel already noticed something was up the second he saw another passenger in the front seat. While some Ubers do give you the option to pool with someone else, Manuel double checked to make sure he hadn’t chosen that option.
Passenger. However, it was getting late and Manuel was in an unfamiliar place, so he decided to get into the car anyways. But just minutes into the ride, he realized he made a huge mistake. For one, the woman sitting in the front didn’t appear to be a random passenger. Rather, the woman, who was clearly intoxicated, was someone the driver knew.
Drunk. According to the Daily Mail UK, the woman was so drunk that she could hardly sit straight, and on more than one occasion she tried to open up the passenger door. But the worst was yet to come.
Groped. "She then began to grope him and grab him. They began to kiss and she began loosening his belt. As we got further and further from my pickup location I had no idea where I was, so I had to stay in the car. She then proceeded to perform oral sex,” said Manuel, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.
Oral sex. Manuel began to film the encounter on Snapchat, and watched in horror as the woman gave the driver oral sex while he was still driving. Manuel thinks the driver, who apologized several times yet did nothing to stop the woman, thought he was too drunk to notice what was happening.
Intoxicated. "I think he assumed at that time of night I was too intoxicated to notice what was going on. At that point, she started loosening his pants, and I was like, 'Alright, I know where this is going,’” said Manuel, as reported by Esquire.
Ride from hell. Manuel was hesitant to get out of the car because he didn’t know where he was, but the minute the woman began to give the driver oral sex, he asked the driver to drop him off. The ride was only eight minutes long, but to Manuel, it seemed like it was never ending.
Outraged. Shockingly, Manuel claims the Uber driver still insisted that Manuel give him a five-star rating. Outraged, Manuel contacted Uber to tell them what happened. However, the company did nothing but give him $10 towards his account.
Last straw. "This was my last straw. I asked the driver to drop me off. Since I've contacted Uber and they refunded me for trip and gave me a '$10 credit.’ They've seen this video and are still 'investigating.' They have been extremely bad at answering any messages I've sent, and I demand something gets done. This is not okay!” said Manuel, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.
Viral. Because he was not getting the answers he wanted from Uber, Manuel decided to go public with the incident, and posted the video to social media, where it quickly went viral. Finally, Uber addressed the situation and reassured Manuel that they were looking into the case.
Behavior. "The behavior of this former driver is appalling and is not tolerated on the Uber app. As soon as this situation was reported to us, we immediately removed this driver's access,” said the statement, as reported by Esquire.
Suspended. Manuel says he was disappointed that he had to go to extremes to get answers from Uber, but is happy he finally got their attention. The driver has reportedly since been suspended.
Push. "I posted the video because they weren't doing anything at all. They were ignoring me. I did it to give it a little push,” said Manuel, as reported by Esquire.
