Cavemen and cavewomen never had time to worry about if it felt good—they were too worried about surviving. However, now that we’ve evolved we have plenty of time to worry about what we sexually like. So, has the evolution of sex changed the reason why we do it? Take a look below as we investigate!
Do you think we do it to reproduce or because it feels good? Tell us your thoughts!
Scientists have many different theories on the subject. Some argue that the pleasurable aspect of sex began not too long ago, so we must still do it to reproduce.
Still, historians are unable to tell if humans have always felt pleasure while doin’ it, though there is no evidence to suggest otherwise.
However, science has proven that humans have been anatomically the same for about 100,000 years, so it’s very likely that it felt just as pleasurable back then as it does now.
Other scientists say that sex can actually hinder any evolution in the human species, because it is copying a gene rather than enhancing it.
Scientists also think that sex is too costly to humans for it to be done solely for reproduction, since we use up much of our energy to have sex and/or get pregnant, and we are also risking contracting STDs.

Also, if you’re saying that humans do it simply to reproduce then why do we still get the urge even after reproducing? Or even more perplexing, then why do women still get the urge when they’re pregnant?

Women are actually extra hot and heavy when they’re pregnant and sex even feels better for pregnant women. So this kind of throws the reproduction theory of sex out the window, doesn’t it?
Yet, humans have had sexual urges since the beginning of their existence. But back then, it used to be a battle for survival, so they had more important things on their minds than just trying to get off - they had to worry about keeping the species alive.

Which means that doin’ it for reproduction worked because here we are, a much bigger population than ever before. So is this urge to reproduce still driving our sex lives?

Well, scientists aren’t so sure anymore. People reaching climax through other types of stimulation other than traditional style, for example, through the behind or oral, is still just as physically pleasing, but has no means of reproduction.
In animals, we can find some species that do it for pleasure as well as reproduction, like monkeys and dolphins, and there is no proof that they have not been doing this since they first appeared on the planet.
Some scientists say that your sexual desires are a social construct, since you have to work to have good sex.

Think about it: When you first did it, it probably didn’t feel so good, but after you figured out what you like, it felt very good.
So it’s not certain that the reason we feel good while doing it is to make us want to do it and thus reproduce more. It could just be because we have evolved to want to enjoy it.
If that doesn’t make sense to you, think about it this way: It could be that back in the day, we didn’t have time to worry about what we wanted since we were so worried about surviving, but now, since surviving is not as difficult as, let’s say, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we have more than enough time to worry and think about what we do or don’t enjoy.
