Lots of people, even those with their own tattoos and piercings, don’t get Suicide Girls. They’re best known for having loads of tattoos, wearing not-so-much clothes and making a living doing it! The SuicideGirls website first began in 2001 by co-founders Sean and Missy Suicide in Portland, but it has since gone global and turned from just another modelling community to a worldwide brand with a lot of stigma attached! To find out more just keep reading!
What exactly is a Suicide Girl?
A Suicide Girl is typically an alternative girl with tattoos, piercings, body modifications, etc who posses’ for typically naked or implied nude for pinup style shoots for the Suicide Girl website. The community is based around breaking certain moulds of beauty all while taking great quality pictures.
“It’s like a punk rock Vogue…with artful nude photos of women.” said Wire Magazine
The Stigma
Lots of people see Suicide Girls as something akin to prostitutes but to us they’re just models! While their pictures often have a sexual pinup style to them, they’re taking fun photos and having a great time doing it. All the lovely Suicide Girl’s and Hopefuls we’ve interviewed in our Rebel Girl series have boasted nothing but support and a kindness from the SuicideGirls Community.
Current Controversy – An Artist Steals Suicide Girls’ Pictures!
The latest scandal in the SuicideGirls world has been with artist Richard Prince. A recent gallery show has uncovered that he took a series of Suicide Girls’ Instagram posts (hashtags and all) and sold them for $90 000 each at the before mentioned Beverly Hills gallery. The issue is that legally he has every right to do so, but it still has had plenty of artists up in arms.
Those over at the SuicideGirls website have responded saying:
“So we at SuicideGirls are going to sell the exact same prints people payed $90,000 for $90 each.”
They are donating profits from the sales of these same works to a non-profit organisation called EFF (The Electronic Frontier Foundation) that aims to defend civil rights of digital users in the digital world.
