Healing crystals. There’s no denying that crystal healing, a pseudoscientific alternative medicine technique that uses stones and crystals, has been on the come up for quite some time now. Eagerly followed by people who swear by the practice's therapeutic properties, the wellness trend is controversial, to say the least. And now, it’s gotten even more risqué, with one company diving into uncharted waters: the crystal sex toy market.

Chakrubs. Calling itself the “original crystal sex toy company,” the Chakrubs brand claims its playtime devices are made from 100 percent pure crystal. Deriving its name from the term Chakra — the Sanskrit word that refers to energy wheels — Chakrubs produces handmade sex toys (namely, d*ldos) crafted from minerals like rose quartz and pure amethyst. These minerals, according to the company, each offer their own unique healing properties to the sacred space that is the vagina.

Chakrubs. Exactly how do these tools work? It’s all about the molecular structure, according to the Chakrubs’ official website. ”Crystals have perfect molecular structures that have positive effects on our electro-magnetic fields,” the site reads. "When our energetic bodies are at ease, we are at ease, we are open to healing, to peace, to love, to all of life's pleasures.”

Chakrubs. The brand’s official website goes on to explain that using these therapeutic sex toys results in "learning to quiet the mind in order to feel subtle energies, develop emotional intelligence, strengthen self-awareness, and accepting every aspect of who you are.” Moreover, it states how using them "not only gets you off, but turns you on in a way in which you will remain turned on and awakened with a renewed sense of self-awareness and wisdom.” Sounds totally great, right? Not so fast.

Jade eggs. Remember Gwyneth Paltrow’s wild recommendation that women stick jade eggs up their vagina? That sounded totally great too, right? Well in case you missed it, a gynecologist advised steering clear of Paltrow’s suggestion because of potential health risks.

Jade eggs. According to Goop, women should insert jade eggs into their vagina on a regular basis. Apparently, egg users claim that using the product "increases chi, orgasms, vaginal muscle tone, hormonal balance, and feminine energy in general,” according to PopSugar. But after the news of the vagina trend went viral, doctors starting dishing out the harsh facts.

Jade eggs. Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB/GYN in San Francisco, penned a blog post explaining why the jade eggs could actually be really bad for your lady bits. "I would like to point out that jade is porous which could allow bacteria to get inside and so the egg could act like a fomite," she writes. "This is not good, in case you were wondering. It could be a risk factor for bacterial vaginosis or even the potentially deadly toxic shock syndrome.” Eek.

Vanessa Cuccia. That said, the potential health risks have not stopped women from purchasing the jade eggs or the crystal sex toys. As such, PAPER magazine’s Sandra Song decided to talk to entrepreneur Vanessa Cuccia, the brain power behind Chakrubs. Apparently, Cuccia used to be a web order fulfillment clerk for a sex toy toy shop, though she was not satisfied with the selections of products that were on the market. So, she did something about it.

Origins. Cuccia told Song that the idea for Chakrubs had started when she first discovered her own sexuality. "Not that I was thinking about crystal d*ldos at nine years old, but even at that age I knew feeling shameful about my body and arousal wasn't right,” she explained. "I was born with a genital medical condition, which was painful, embarrassing and challenging to deal with. I'd even repressed the memory until I started practicing with Chakrubs -- [as] part of the practice is to uncover repressed emotions in order to unlock energy flow.”

Origins. Cuccia goes on to explain that she was only 23 when she had the idea for her company. "I was 23 and it was time for me to take control over my life and my happiness,” she told Song. "I had stayed with the boyfriend to whom I lost my virginity to for six years, never truly feeling sexually satisfied or empowered, but I felt that I was now old enough to start something amazing, that I could now be taken seriously.”

A gap in the industry. It is while she was working at a sex toy shop and studying with a spiritual teacher that Cuccia developed an interest in crystals. That’s also when she realized what sex toys were lacking: spiritual properties. "One night, I tagged along with my houseguest to the home of a woman with whom he intended to discuss some business ventures with, as well as their respective spiritual philosophies,” she explained to Song. "She showed us her collection of crystals, and when she produced one that was particularly phallic in shape, something ‘clicked' within me."

A gap in the industry. Cuccia notes that she had never felt inclined to try out any of the products at the sex toy store she was employed at, "as many of them were made of plastic, were battery-powered, and included dyes and other potentially harmful chemicals.” She went on to tell Song: "The molecular structures of crystals, on the other hand, are so perfect that they vibrate at, and emit, very strong, very harmonious, very healthy frequencies. Combining those frequencies with a person's own sexual energy might not only increase pleasure, but might also help facilitate personal awareness and growth."

Different models. Cuccia states that not all of Chakrubs’ “models” are the same — some crystals serve specific purposes. For instance, The Charub Heart, Rose Quartz "dissolves the sorrows, worries, fears and resentments suppressing the heart's ability to give and receive love.” Meanwhile, the Chakrub Prism, Clear Quartz is "a stone of clarity, which dispels negativity and clears away negative energy."

Different models. Some of Cuccia’s other favorites? The Chakrub Black Onyx, which is "said to help alleviate fears and worries and to help you to feel comfortable within yourself and in your surroundings.” And the Chakrub Amethyst, also known as "a meditative and calming stone which works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to provide calm, balance, patience, and peace."

Bottom line. While we here at Rebel Circus certainly don’t know whether or not these healing crystal sex toys actually do make your vagina a better place, we know that they carry potential health risks. In other words, no, we do not advocate that you stick a crystal rod up your genitals. But whether or not you do it, well… that’s entirely up to you. Best of luck.
